WINNEBAGO Iowa - (Died Sioux City)

Michael R. Smith Sr., 49, of Winnebago died Friday, Dec, 13, 1996 at Marian Health Center, after a long illness.

Services will be conducted by Norman Free at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Augustine Catholic Church, with the Rev. Tom Bowen officiating. The Winnebago Veterans Association will conduct military rites. Burial will be in the Winnebago Cemetery under the direction of the Winnebago Tribe's Wake and Burial Program.

Mr. Smith was born March 23, 1947 in Winnebago to Waukon and Emily (Lowry) Smith. He married Esther Wolfe in 1969 in Winnebago. Living in Winnebago most of his life, he attended school at St. Augustines Catholic school and Winnebago Public School, graduating in 1965. He attended National College of Business in Rapid City, S.D. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968-1970 as a pay disbursement specialist. He was the Johnson O'Malley Director in the early 70s. He also served as the executive director of the Winnebago Housing Authority and the finance director for the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. He was on the Winnebago Tribal Council from 1975-1978. In 1976, he was appointed treasurer of the council.

He was a member of the Winnebago Veterans Association.

Survivors include two sons, Michael R. Smith Jr. of Omaha, Neb., and Norman of Winnebago; two daughters, Michelle of Winnebago, and "Rosie" of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; three brothers, John, David, and George of Winnebago; four sisters, Regina Brown, Pat Medina, Jennifer and Teresa, of Winnebago; and a special friend, Sharleen PretendsEagle.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Cheryl "Bootie"; and his father.
