John A. Palmer, 64, of Holstein, passed away on Monday, Nov. 23, 2020, at the Horn Memorial Hospital of Ida Grove.

A Private Family Graveside Service was held on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the Little Sioux Township Cemetery of Smithland. Pastor Roy Struble officiated. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, masks were mandatory and social distancing rules applied during all services.

The Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton was in charge of the funeral arrangements. Condolences may be sent online www.armstrongfuneral.com.

John Arnold Palmer, the son of Paul J. and Marilyn M. (Kirkpatrick) Palmer, was born on Aug. 19, 1956, in Omaha, Neb. John grew up in the Smithland area and received his education at Westwood High School in Sloan.

During his lifetime, John worked at many different locations. Most of those jobs were running heavy equipment for Krage Construction, Van Buskirk Construction, and Grell Construction. His most recent employment was with River Sales in Sloan.

John loved the great outdoors. He enjoyed sitting around a campfire, telling tall tales, and listening to country music. He loved his dogs, especially taking his little dog, Bubba, for long walks. John will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory include his mother, Marilyn Palmer of Smithland; brothers, Jeffrey Palmer of Spencer, Neb., Curtis (Victoria) Palmer of Whiting, James Palmer and Kevin Palmer both of Smithland; sisters, Kristina (Fred) Barge of Whiting, Carla Palmer of Schleswig, and Deborah (Brent) Kroll of Schlewsig; uncle, Terry Kirkpatrick of Mineral Wells, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Palmer; brother, Bryan “Pee Wee” Palmer; paternal grandparents, Elmer and Beulah Palmer; maternal grandparents, Walter and Isabel Kirkpatrick; nephews, Robert Palmer, Donald Palmer, and Cory Theeler; as well as extended family.
