SIOUX CITY - John Joseph Gajewski, 87, lifelong resident of Sioux City died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, in Sioux City.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Fu neral Home, with the Rev. Al Weiss officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be noon until service time Friday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com.

John was born April 19, 1922, in Sioux City, to Christopher and Frances (Maslowsky) Gajewski. He was one of seven children. He attended St. Francis Grade School. He was employed with Armour and Company and later with Swift and Company as a butcher, retiring in 1984.

He married Joyce Poindexter on June 5, 1969, in Dakota City. The couple raised their family here. Joyce died in 1993.

He was a member of the former St. Francis Catholic Church. He enjoyed many hobbies such as gardening, yard work, long vigorous walks and being able to fix anything. He also enjoyed his quite time and being able to just sit and read. Everyone who knew him enjoyed the time they spent with him.

Survivors include a son, Mike and Wanda Still of Fountain Valley, Calif.; three daughters, Cheryl and Art LaCroix of Sioux City, Lori and Greg Coyle of Sioux City and Jonette Jo DeMey of Sioux Falls, S.D.; nine grandchildren, Michelle, Kristy, Shawn, Tim, Jennifer, Tiffany, Ryan, Christine and Jessica; five greatgrandchildren, Miranda, Jessica, Jacob, Noah and Zoe; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Maxine Cisney of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; a granddaughter, Stephany; a grandson, Andrew; and a son-in-law, Roger DeMey.
