SIOUX CITY - John F. Hernandez, 80, of Sioux City passed away Friday, May l, 2009 at his residence.

A celebration of his life will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

John Francis Hernandez was born Dec. 7, 1928, in Laredo, Texas, the son of Jesse and Elsie (Fredrick) Hernandez. The family moved to the Sioux City area when John was 4 years old. John joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his honorable discharge, he worked at various packinghouses in the area, 15 years with Armour & Company, two years with Floyd Valley Packing and retired from Swift Packing Company when they closed. He was an avid fisherman and also liked to play pool. He was a member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; two sons, Mike and his wife, Laura of Round Rock, Texas, and Steve of Sioux City; a daughter, Lynne and her husband, Harold Coffman of Branson, Iowa; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carlos Ramirez; and his step-father, Louis Medina.
