SIOUX CITY-Donald D. Handy, 74, of Sioux City went to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy battle with emphysema.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Riverside United Methodist Church. Burial will be in McCook Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Home in Sergeant Bluff.

Donald "Don" Handy was born Feb. l, 1935, in Spencer, Iowa. He worked numerous jobs including security guard at Gateway Airport and Interbake Foods until retiring in 2007. Previously, he was employed as a foreman at IBP and as an iron worker. In his younger years, he was the manager of Swanson's Grocery Store in Cherokee, Iowa. He and his wife, Patty, owned Derby Lane Trailer Court in North Sioux City for nine years.

He enjoyed family time, fishing, country music and morning coffee with his buddies in North Sioux City.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Patty Handy; his daughter, Dawn Handy VanMaanen and her children, Shawnda, Stephanie and Shad Morrical and their father, Linn Morrical of Sioux City; a daughter, Lynn Johnson Karrer and her son, Jonathan Nemechek and his father, Roy Nemechek of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Jill and Bruce Peters and their children, Eric Peters and his wife, Kyla and Chad Peters of Le Mars, Iowa; a son and his wife, Brett and Tara Handy of Norfolk, Neb. and their children, Taylynn and Kaitlin; a son and his wife, Scott and Roxanne Handy of Hinton, Iowa, and their children, B.J. and Justin; a son and his wife, Don and Rhonda Handy of Aurelia, Iowa, and their children, Nick and his wife, Da and Chris Handy; six greatgrandchildren; three brothers, Junior Handy and his wife, Estelle and Clifford Handy, all of Spencer, Iowa, and Glen Handy of Sioux City; brothers-in-law, Chuck Rosewall Sr. of Cherokee and Kenny Rose-wall of Dixon, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Handy of Spencer; his mother, Alice Galbraith Terhark Handy of Spencer; two brothers, Darrel Handy of Spencer and Sam Handy of North Sioux City; and his sisters, Martha Hollenbeck of Bellflower, Calif., and Margaret Schmal of Pleasantville, N.J.
