SIOUX CITY -Richard J. "Rich" Goergen, 61, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, April 26, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 5:30 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 6 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Rich was born Sept. 1, 1947, in Sioux City, to Albert and Marguerite (Heenan) Goergen. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Franklin, Woodrow Wilson and Central High School, graduating in 1966. He had always been a lifelong resident of the Siouxland area. He spent time in Germany while he served in the U.S. Army.

He was employed with IBP in Dakota City. He later worked for Long Lines, which later became MCI for 15 years. In recent years, he worked as a security guard for different companies in the Siouxland area. He currently was employed at Wall of Fame part-time in the warehouse.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was an avid runner and qualified for the 100th anniversary running of the Boston Marathon in 1996. He also coached youth athletics and officiated basketball, softball and volleyball. He enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting and spending time with his six grandchildren and family events.

Survivors include his wife, Angela of Sioux City; two daughters, Cheryl and Chris Ameen of Lawton, Iowa, and Carla and Brent Cooper of Olathe, Kan.; six grandchildren, Savannah, Keyana, Zachary, Sierra, Cheyenne and Landon; two sisters, Darlene and Russ Mogensen of Sioux City and Marge and Mike Osborn of Merrill, Iowa; two brothers, Paul Goergen of Omaha and Don Goergen of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
