SIOUX CITY -- Russell G. Peterson, 90, of Sioux City died Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Alan Wicks officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Reserves. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Russell was born March 10, 1919, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the son of George and Clara (Kackley) Peterson. He came to Sioux City as a child and attended Sioux City schools. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Whiting, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941 to July 1945.

He married Laura J. Thomsen on May 18, 1946, in Sioux City. He worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 35 years.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church, the American Legion Monahan Post 64 and the Model Railroad Club. He played softball and roller-skated until the age of 80. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees.

He is survived by his wife, Laura of Sioux City; five children, George Peterson and his wife, Sally of Ashland, Ore., Norma May of Sioux City, Audrey and her husband, Jeff Dack of Wailuku, Hawaii, Walt Peterson and his wife, Anna of Sioux City and Marilyn Peterson and her husband, Paul Cowan of Las Vegas, Nev.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son-in-law, James May.

Pallbearers will be Kevin May, Craig May, Corey May, John Mayo, Joseph Peterson, David Janssen and Matt Sewalson.

Memorials may be made in his name to First Lutheran Church.
