SIOUX CITY -- Arthur C. Olsen, 94, of South Sioux City, formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Third Presbyterian Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Jennifer Santer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Funeral Home -- Morningside Chapel. Online condolences may be sent at www.christysmith.com.

Arthur was born Jan. 5, 1915, in Hazelton, Iowa, the son of William and Mary Caroline (Melvard) Olsen. He grew up in Hartington, Neb. He attended school through the ninth grade when he quit to help care for his invalid mother and work to help support his family.

On April 5, 1937, he married Annetta M. Gartner in Norfolk, Neb. They moved to Sioux City in 1942. From 1945 to 1966 they lived on Court Street. At that time they were members of First Covenant Church. In 1966 they moved to Morningside where they lived until 2002 when they moved to Regency Courte Assisted Living. Because of poor health, he became a resident of Regency Square Care Center in October 2006.

During World War II, he was a mechanic at the Sioux City Air Base. Then he was a streetcar conductor for several years. Most of his working years were spent as a truck driver and a member of the Teamsters union. He retired in 1973 from Crouse Cartage Co.

Art was a member of Third Presbyterian Church in Sioux City, serving as deacon and on the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Men's Club and enjoyed the cribbage games and fishing trips. He also bowled in the senior citizens bowling league.

He is survived by his loving wife, Annetta; a daughter and her husband, Alice and Gary Hacker of Sioux City; grandchildren, Gene and Sandra Hacker of Sioux City, Chris and Tina Hacker of Woodbury, Minn., Mark and Katie Olsen of Bowie, Md., and Steff (Olsen) and James V. Jay of Aledo, Texas; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Schaeffer of Hartington; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Allan; four brothers, Kenneth, Donald, Ralph and Lester; and three sisters, Leola Crane, Mildred Martin and Florence Cobler.
