1 April 2009SIOUX CITY -- Lois Bastian, 94, of Sioux City died Sunday, March 29, 2009, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes, with Pastor Martha Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Lois was born on Nov. 17, 1914, in Sioux City, the daughter of Paul Benjamin and Lola May (Tuck) Leitner. She was raised in Sioux City and attended Seventh Day Adventist School. She married Benjamin W. Bastian on Nov. 3, 1933, in Hawarden, Iowa. He died on Dec. 22, 1997, in Sioux City. Lois had worked for the Sioux City School System in the Food Service Department and for Otis Radio Co.
She was an active member of the Church of All Nations. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and walking. She belonged to the Siouxland Y, where she was the oldest member to participate in Water Aerobics. She was also a member of the Goodwill Auxiliary. She also enjoyed fishing and camping.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Benita and Roger Leff and Frances and Vern Torgerson, all of Sioux City; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; four great-stepgrandchildren; six great-great-stepgrandchildren; a sister, Hazel Scalzi of Kennewick, Wash.; a son-in-law, Don Taft of Knoxville, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Lola Marie Taft; a great-grandchild, Jillian Low; two sisters, Lettie Gonzales and Darlene Lee; and three brothers, Ralph, Paul and John.
