PIERSON, Iowa -- Mervin P. Anfinson, 89, of rural Pierson passed away Friday, March 27, 2009, at Correctionville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Correctionville, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Correctionville, with Pastor Bert Burwell, A.i.M. officiating. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery, Rock Branch. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rohde Funeral Home, 28 West 2nd St., Kingsley, Iowa.

Mervin was born Feb. 6, 1920, in rural Hartington, Neb., to Martin and Gurina (Iverson) Anfinson. He grew up in the Hartington area, where he attended rural school through the eighth grade. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941 and later was transferred to the U.S. Air Force, where he was a mechanic on P-38 airplanes. Mervin was honorably discharged in January 1946.

On Oct. 14, 1944, he married Hulda "Polly" Schaeffer in Santa Rosa, Calif. The couple moved to rural Pierson after Mervin's discharge, where they started farming with Polly's parents. Farming was Mervin's lifelong passion.

Mervin was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church, having served on the church council and as Sunday school superintendent. He had also served on the F.H.A. Board, Pierson Elevator Board, Martin Luther Home Board at Beatrice, Neb., and Woodbury County Farm Bureau Board.

He is survived by his wife, Polly; sons, Dennis (Barbara) Anfinson and W. Lee (Luella) Anfinson of rural Pierson; daughters, Rhonda K. Anfinson of Bosque Farms, N.M. and Cleone (Dan) Flemming of Cory, Colo.; a sister, Fern Hansen of Lawton, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Hilda Dragoo of rural Pierson; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and five sisters.
