SIOUX CITY -- Sidney "Sid" or "Pops" L. Kalin, 89, of Sioux City passed away after complications from surgery on Sunday, March 29, 2009. He was in the company of his three children Steve, Janet and Bruce.

Sid Kalin was born on April 21, 1919, in Odebolt, Iowa, to Jacob and Rose (Sherman) Kalin. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School, where he was captain of the debate team. He then went on to graduate from the University of Nebraska, where he became a lifelong Huskers fan and served as the president of his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Mu.

Sid is survived by his beloved wife, Geraldine (Shapiro) Kalin, to whom he has been married for 65 years. In 1946, Sid joined his father in the family business, currently named Kalin's Indoor Comfort. He served as President of the Association of Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors. He retired in 1999, but remained involved with the company for years to follow. Kalin's Indoor Comfort is now under the leadership of his youngest son, Bruce.

Sid was very active in the community; he served on the board of directors of the Tax Research Conference, Sioux City Symphony, Lewis & Clark National Monument Association, Sioux City Human Rights Commission, Sioux City Better Business Bureau and Sioux City Construction League. He served as Chairman of the National Association of Christians and Jews, chairman of the budget committee of the United Way of Siouxland and as community chairman of the United Jewish Appeal. Sid was past Vice President of the Council of Community Service and was honored by the Sertoma Club for his service to the community. He was a member of the Congregation of Beth Shalom and has served as President of Mount Sinai Temple, Temple Brotherhood and the Sioux City Jewish Federation. He was looking forward to the community gathering this weekend for the dedication of the Geraldine and Sidney Kalin Religious Life Complex at Congregation Beth Shalom. Sid was dearly beloved by all of his children and grandchildren and

Sid could often be overheard proudly saying, "I'm so blessed -- I have wonderful children and so many wonderful grandchildren."

Sid was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Frances Lipman. He is survived by his three children, Steven A. Kalin of Minneapolis, Janet K. Yulman and her husband, Richard of Coral Gables, Fla., Bruce Kalin and his wife, Linda of Sioux City and nine grandchildren, Lindsay, Jessica and Alana Kalin, Katy and Brett Yulman, Michael, Jenna, Jacqueline and James Kalin.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Sinai Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 11:45 a.m. at Congregation Beth Shalom. Rabbi Guy Greene will officiate. Pallbearers include Michael Kalin, James Kalin, Brett Yulman, Richard Yulman, Dick Kalin and Brent Rosenthal. Honorary Pallbearers are Lee Tinsman and Steve Schultz. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers. The family requests that any donations be sent to Congregation Beth Shalom Capital Campaign, 815 38th St., Sioux City, Iowa, 51104.
