SIOUX CITY -- Vernon M. "Vern" Young, 86, of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009 at a local care facility.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Heartland Baptist Church. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery with Military Graveside Services, under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7 p.m., at the church.

Vern was born on March 30, 1922 in Sioux City, the son of Obert and Marianne (Van Waart) Young. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on March 8, 1942 and was deployed to Africa during World War II. Vern also served during the Korean War.

On Nov. 23, 1968, Vern was united in marriage to Leona Scott in Sioux City. Vern was a cook in several area restaurants in the Sioux City area, retiring in 1984.

His life revolved around his family, especially the grandchildren. He enjoyed the Bandits, Explorers and Cubs.

Vern is survived by his wife Leona; two stepsons, Jim Scott and his wife Marilyn and Bob Scott and his wife Karen, all of Sioux City; nine grandchildren, Rick Scott and his wife Mara of Lawton, Iowa, Barb Scott and her special friend Sean Chesher of Sioux City, Andy Scott of Tallahassee, Fla., Pam Scott and her special friend Joe Frangedakis of Plattsmouth, Neb., Matt Scott and his wife Laura of North Liberty, Iowa, Jesse Scott and his fiance Patrice Morris, Steve Scott and his wife Molly, Sarah Scott and her fiance Chris Boesch, Katie Scott and her special friend Don Trimble, all of Sioux City; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler Scott, Parker Hinrichs, Ike Scott, Abe Scott and Mackenzie Scott. The family also wishes to acknowledge the friendship of Denny and Dee Blatchford of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and also by his mother-in-law, "Grandma Blatchford."

Memorials may be made in Vern's memory to Heartland Community Baptist Church, 3601 Country Club Blvd, Sioux City, IA 51104.
