SOUTH SIOUX CITY (Died Sioux City)-- James M. Todd, 66, of South Sioux City passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital after a 16-year battle with cancer.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Hope Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Randall Knuth officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

James was born Feb. 13, 1943, in Homer, Neb., the son of Piatt and Iva R. (Eriksen) Todd. He grew up in the Hubbard, Neb., area and started working on the farm as a boy. He built radio towers and was an iron worker with the Local 184 for many years.

He married Phyllis J. Gatezemeyer. He drove truck with his wife, as owners and operators for more than 10 years. He retired in 1995, after being diagnosed with cancer in 1993.

The couple enjoyed camping, biking and walking. They traveled extensively. They wintered in the California desert for 30 years, where they have many friends. He loved people and loved to talk, especially about politics. He enjoyed joking with the staff at the June E. Nylen Cancer Center and B-S'ing at the South Sioux City Hy-Vee.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; a brother, Kenneth Todd and his wife, Karen of Sergeant Bluff; three sisters, Vonnie Harrington and Norma and her husband, Ron Rappe, all of Sioux City and Janet Temple of Newell, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Barbara Wilen.

Pallbearers will be Erin and Erik Todd, Marvin Harrington Jr., Jim and Jerry Stork and James Temple.

Memorials may be directed to the June E. Nylen Cancer Center.
