LAWTON, Iowa -- Marjorie D. Schlesser, 84, of Lawton died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Revs. Daniel Guenther and Cecil A. Lotief officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a vigil service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Avenue. Marjorie was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Sioux City, the daughter of William and Margaret (Sweeny) Berens. She grew up in Sioux City and attended St. Boniface Grade School, then graduated from Cathedral High School in 1941. She graduated from St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in 1945.

She married James T. Schlesser on June 11, 1947, at St. Boniface Catholic Church. James died April 21, 1997, in Lawton. She worked as a registered nurse at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital from 1945 to 1959. She retired at that time to raise her family and help with the management of the family farm.

In her early years, she was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. She had been a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church since 1955. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading, gardening and politics. She was known for her keen sense of humor and for her wit.

Survivors include three children, Kathy A. and her husband, Mark Davies of Lawton, Michael Anthony Schlesser of Dallas, Texas, and Thomas J. Schlesser and his wife, Claire of New York City; a brother, Donald Berens of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Kerri "Poppen" Davies and her fiance, Jim Boerst, Kelly Patrick Davies and his wife, Monica; and two great-grandchildren, Payton and Keira.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and five brothers, Marvin, Merle, Earl, Gerald "Mike" and Wayne Berens.

Pallbearers will be Gail Bauerly, Norman Thoreson, Tim, Bill, Jeff and Tom Berens. Honorary pallbearer will be Donald Berens.
