SIOUX CITY -- John C. "Jack" Gellatly, 90, of Sioux City died of cancer Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at his residence.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with Chaplain Marie Lykken of Hospice of Siouxland officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Logan Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Reserves. There will be no visitation. Jack was born Oct. 21, 1918, in Hastings, Neb., the son of Chalmers and Ruth (Malone) Gellatly. He grew up in Red Cloud, Neb., then moved to Lincoln, Neb., where he graduated from high school. He attended the University of Nebraska. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 5, 1941, and served for 19 months in the Pacific Theater. He was very proud of his service in the U.S. Army and served until the end of World War II.

He married Mary Jane Wilson on Feb. 27, 1942. The couple had three sons. She died Dec. 9, 1992. He worked for Travelers Insurance for 28 years. He lived and worked in Omaha, Dallas, Texas, Phoenixville, Pa., then moved back to Omaha. He retired in 1982. In 1994, he moved to Sioux City and married Renate Lewis on Oct. 29, 1994.

He was a member of the Siouxland Senior Center and did volunteer work for Hospice of Siouxland for 14 years until his health declined. His main hobby was woodcarving. He was a member of woodcarving clubs in Omaha and Sioux City. He enjoyed going to woodcarving shows.

Survivors include his wife, Renate of Sioux City; three sons, John Chalmers Gellatly of Belles, Texas, Thomas Wilson Gellatly and Michael Malone Gellatly, both of Omaha; two stepsons and their wives, Thomas Erik and Elaine Lewis of Fayetteville, Ga., and Anthony Randall and Julie Lewis of Sioux City; four grandchildren; a stepgrandson; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard M. Gellatly; and a sister, Joan R. Gellatly.
