12 March 2009SIOUX CITY -- Hans M. VanWaart, 96, a life long resident of Sioux City, died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Countryside Senior Living.
Private services were held at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Hans was born Sept. 24, 1912, in Sioux City. He attended Sioux City Public Schools. He worked at McCracken, now known as Bisser, for 50 years. During that time span, from October 1942 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Army, stationed mainly in the Philippines.
In 1953, he married Frances Diimig. Upon his retirement, he went to work at Phillips Kiln Service on a part-time basis. He always enjoyed anything mechanical.
The couple were both members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary of Sioux City; a son, Douglas and his wife, Lisa of Anamosa, Iowa; brothers, Leo and Hank; and sister, Margaret Nelson and Pat Dikeman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances; brothers, Joseph and Peter; and a stepsister, Marion.
