SIOUX CITY -- William A. Bulit, 89, of Sioux City died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at a local nursing home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil and rosary service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. William was born June 18, 1919, in Sioux City, to Antone and Meri (Kupronis) Bulit. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from East High School in 1938. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Sept. 13, 1939. He was a prisoner of war for three and one half years, where he marched in the Bataan Death March in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged on April 3, 1946.

He returned to Sioux City, where he met and married his wife, Arlene Bernard on Aug. 20, 1947. He was employed at various places before going to work at Williams Brothers Pipeline Company for 18 years. He then was the owner and operator of the Black Coach Lounge and Restaurant for nine years before retiring.

He was a life long member of St. Casimir's Lithuanian Catholic Church. After it closed, he began attending St. Boniface Catholic Church. He also was a member of the American Legion Monahan Post 64 and the American Ex-prisoner of War Department of Iowa. He enjoyed carpentry work, playing cards and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing and staying at the cabin in Minnesota.

He is survived by his five children, Connie Rasmussen of Salix, Iowa, William A. Bulit Jr. of Sioux Falls, S.D., Robert Bulit and his wife, Julie of Sioux City, Bryan Bulit of Sioux Falls and Mary and her husband, Ted Greene of Jackson, Neb.; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Alfred Bulit and his wife, Mabel.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlene; a brother, Leo Bulit; and a grandchild, Corey Rasmussen.

Pallbearers will be R. John Bulit, Brandon Bulit, Chad Lewon, Brian Nelsen, Brad DeRoin and Mark Lippert. Honorary pallbearers will be Doug and Joe Shinkunis.
