4 March 2009SIOUX CITY -- Ellen Elizabeth (Buckley) Coen, formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, in Chandler, Ariz.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Ellen was born at home on Sept. 16, 1914, to Humbert M. Buckley and Minnie Elizabeth (Bolin) Buckley. She was the third child born to the couple, having two brothers, Jack and Jerry Buckley. She was raised and educated in Sioux City.
She married Bernard J. "Barney" Coen on Nov. 29, 1939, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. They made their home in Sioux City until 1956, when they moved to Minneapolis. From there, they moved to Denver, Colo., in 1957 and to Portland, Ore., in 1964. After retirement, they moved to Eugene, Ore., until Barney's death in 1992. She then moved to Woonsocket, S.D., in 1993 to be near family. In October 1999, she moved to Bismarck, N.D., with family and returned to Woonsocket in 2003. From there, she moved to Chandler, Ariz., in 2004 with family.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Kay (Richard) Johnston of Chillicothe, Mo.; a son, Thomas Coen of Hastings, Minn.; nieces, Jackie (Richard) Lopez of Gold Canyon, Ariz., Betty Pearson of Long Beach, Calif., and Betty (Bruce) McBride of Lincoln, Neb.; cousins, Virginia Hummel of Sioux City and Joan Cote of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers; two sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; a nephew; and several cousins.
Gifts are to be sent to St. Boniface Catholic Church in lieu of flowers.
