13 February 2009SIOUX CITY -- Joseph A. Long, 76, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ, with the Revs. Dan Lozer and Lairo Keever officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Sunday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mr. Long was born Jan. 8, 1933, in Homer, Neb., the son of Arthur J. and Frances (Bates) Long.
He was married to Joellen E. Gaylor on July 22, 1950 at Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ in Sioux City. He was a police officer with the city of Sioux City for 29 years, retiring in 1989.
His hobbies included golf, Las Vegas, rodeo, horse shows, flying, family camping trips, but most of all, spending time with his family. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events, softball, basketball, volleyball and swimming. He was a member of Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ, where he served as a trustee. He also was a member of the Sioux City Police Association, Iowa Police Association and the National Police Association.
Survivors include his wife, Joellen Long; five daughters, Candice Kirts of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Denise Ayers and Mike Mitchel of Omaha, Cynthia and her husband, Steve Hope of Omaha, Jan and her husband, Mike Frerichs of Hinton, Iowa, and Nan Long of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Corey Ayers, Tucker Noll, Alex Kirts, Cassie Frerichs, Katie Kirts and Levi Frerichs; a great-grandchild, Jersey Gordon; two sisters, Lilla and her husband, Dick Wheelen of Sioux City and Mary Leedom of Fremont, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Patty Newman.
