Died in Sioux City

SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Ruby B. "Chub" Barber, 81, of South Sioux City passed away Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Martha Anderson of Trimble United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Dakota City (Neb.) Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Ruby was born Feb. 21, 1927, in Gregory, S.D., the daughter of William and Emily (Lapour) Warnkvist. She grew up between Gregory and Alcester, S.D. In 1945, she came to Sioux City and worked at Sioux City Battery.

On Jan. 31, 1948, she married Robert E. Barber Sr. in Sioux City. They later divorced in 1974. She was a homemaker until 1967, when she went to work for the Sioux City Community School District at its central kitchen. In 1970, she started working in housekeeping for St. Joseph Hospital and retired from Marian Health Center in 1989 as supervisor of housekeeping.

She was a member of Trimble United Methodist Church and the South Sioux City Eagles Club. Ruby enjoyed family, friends, gardening and dancing, especially polka music.

She is survived by two sons, Robert Barber Jr. and his wife, Maxine, and Randy Barber and his wife, Trish, all of Sioux City; a sister, Ardyth Karel and her husband, Bud of Winner, S.D.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Tim; two brothers, Howard and Harlan Warnkvist; a sister, Marie Bekish; and her life mate, Gib Mayberry.

Pallbearers will be Bo Barber, Gary and Jim Karel, Scott Smith, Matt and Andy Thompson. Honorary pallbearers will be Lowell Washburn, Tim, Wyatt, Chris, T.J. and Chance Torticill.
