Alma Laura Kovarna, 87, of Merrill, I A, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2009, at Sunrise Community Retirement Center in Sioux City, IA.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning, April 4, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel on Hamilton Blvd. in Sioux City with Rev. Roger Madden, First United Methodist Church presiding. Visitation with the family present was at the Chapel one hour prior to the funeral time. Alma was born in Jefferson, South Dakota, the daughter of William and Ethel Edwards. She attended country school and graduated in 1941 from Jefferson High School. She worked in Sioux City at Wincharger, a defense plant during the war. Her job was winding and soldering armatures for airplanes. She met her husband, Stanley Kovarna, before he went into the Navy. When he returned, they were married and celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in November. They lived on the same farm in Merrill, Iowa, until a year ago when they moved into Sunrise.

Alma is survived by her loving husband, Stanley Kovarna, and four children—daughters Cheryl Hardersen and her husband, Darrel, of Onawa, I A; Diana Lahrs and her husband, Bruce, of Merrill, IA; Debbie Binneboese, and her husband, Dennis of Hinton, IA; and a son, Steve Kovarna, and his wife, Mary, of Merrill, IA; two brothers—Clifford Edwards of Sioux City, IA, and Bill Edwards, and his wife, Liz, of Lake Elsmore, CA; 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 2 step great-grandchildren, plus many nieces, nephews, cousins, and one aunt, Ellen Vossler, Dorchester, NE.

She was preceded in death by her parents, twin sisters, three uncles, three brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.

Casket Bearers were her grandsons—Ryan Lahrs, Jonathan Hardersen. Adam Binneboese, Carl Binneboese, and Kyle Kovarna.

Honorary Casket Bearers were her granddaughters— Jennifer Burress, Missy Hardersen, Beth Trejo, and Laura Binneboese.

Luncheon was served at the Gerwulf Community Center at Sunrise Retirement Home immediately following the committal.
