Charge Against the Men Who Killed Mel Powers.
In attempting to act as peacemaker in a pistol fight between Harry Clayton and A1 Scheefer, Mel Powers, a former steamboat man, racehorse own¬er and gambler, was shot through the heart and instantly killed at Sioux City. Clayton is a bartender. He is under arrest.
Harry Clayton and A1 Sheefer have been arrested by Chief of Police John Dlnen, charged with the murder of Mel Powers. It was at first thought that Powers was killed while acting the part of peacemaker between the two men, who were flourishing pistols, but evidence found by the police is said to indicate that the death of the old riverman was the result of a conspiracy in which the two are thought to be implicated.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in Floyd Cemetery in Sioux City and was born in 1858 and died June 29, 1908.
