1 July 2009OTO, Iowa -- Kenneth Oliver Slentz, 58, son of Kenneth and Dorothy (Sawin) Slentz, entered the kingdom of our Lord on Feb. 26, 2009, at an Orlando, Fla. hospital of pancreatic cancer.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Oto United Methodist Church of Christ in Oto, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Cremation and a private interment has occurred. Local arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, Iowa.
Born Oct. 19, 1950, in Sioux City, Ken attended schools in Mapleton, Atlantic and Des Moines, Iowa, and Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
On May 29, 1971, he married Valorie Gerrity. He received a bachelor of science degree in education at Truman University in Kirksville, Mo., in 1973. He also was in R.O.T.C. and graduated as a second lieutenant. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather with special talents in music, art and mechanics.
He taught science in Dike, Iowa. He also trained as a helicopter pilot for the Cobra, Huey and Chinook and went into active service in the U.S. Army Reserves in June 1974. He retired with the rank of major after serving 10 years. He worked for Pratt and Whitney and was currently a valued employee of Siemens in Orlando, Fla.
He was an active member of the University Methodist Church in Orlando.
Survivors include his wife, Valorie; a daughter, Jennifer (Michael) Lodes; a son, Andrew (Jennifer) Slentz; grandchildren, Jacob and Joshua Lodes, Halley, Travis and Grave Slentz, all of Florida; his parents, Kenneth and Dorothy of Winnipeg, Canada; sisters, Cynthia (Tim) Raxter of Portland, Ore., Patricia Slentz and Laura (Danny) Carroll of Winnipeg; sisters-in-law, Becky (Pete) Hall; brothers-in-law, Bud (Loretta) Gerrity and Jim (Cindy) Gerrity; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Alan; grandparents, Roy and Olive Slentz and Martin and Olive Sawin; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mrs. and Ms. John Gerrity.
