22 February 2009SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Bernard F. Manley, 97, of South Sioux City, formerly of Sioux City and Anthon, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at a South Sioux City care center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Daniel Wittrock officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m.
Scriptural wake service followed by a chalice service, at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City.
Bernard was born Jan. 8, 1912, in Minot, N.D., the son of James E. and Mabel (Bass) Manley. He married Mary E. Carney on Jan. 30, 1934, in Waterbury, Neb. The couple farmed in the Willis, Neb., area until 1941, when they moved to South Sioux City, and then to Sioux City in 1955. In the fall of 1968 he started Service Master of Siouxland and owned and operated it until 1973, when his son, Gene became a partner in the business. Gene purchased the business from his father in 1979. On Oct. 28, 1979, his wife, Mary passed away in Sioux City.
He married Inez Groth on June 6, 1981, in Anthon, Iowa. They lived there until she passed away on April 11, 2006, in Correctionville, Iowa. Bernard moved back to South Sioux City in May 2008.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City. He was a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Garrigan Assembly 265 of Sioux City.
Survivors include four sons and their wives, William J. and Vera of Akron, Iowa, John B. (Jack) and Patricia of Sheridan, Colo., Gene T. and Carole of South Sioux City, and Donald R. and Jeanette of Omaha; a daughter, Mary Frances Manley of Sioux City; 19 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Pauline; an infant son, Darrell; three brothers, Walter, Martin and Art; and two sisters, Lucille Rush and Rita Bottorff.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Dale, Bernie, Scott, Chris, Bryan and Eric Manley. Honorary pallbearers will be Doug, Mike, Philip, David, Sean, Jim and Tom Manley and the Groth Family.
