18 May 2008Billie S. Hossack, 87, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at his home with his family at his side.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Dan Lozer officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by a Masonic service, at the funeral home. Billie was born April 20, 1921, to George and Hannah (Hancer) Hossack in Sioux Falls, S.D. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Sioux City Schools, graduating from Central High School.
He married Ruth Helen Hauswald on Dec. 24, 1942, in Sioux City, at First Presbyterian Church. Billie enlisted into the U.S. Army on Sept. 5, 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater in Central Burma. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 26, 1945. Upon his return to Sioux City, he began working at Thompson Electric Company. He later became vice president of the company. Billie retired from Thompson Electric in 1986.
He was a volunteer at Siouxland Community Blood Bank and at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center for 17 years in the Digestive Disorder Department. In 2007, he was honored as the volunteer of the year. He volunteered more than 6,000 hours at St. Luke's. He also donated more than 10 gallons of blood to the Siouxland Blood Bank. Billie was a member of Triangle Masonic Lodge 643, Scottish Rite Freemasonry, Moose Lodge and a life member of Abu Bekr Temple, where he was the captain of the Shrine Foot Patrol. He was also a member of the I.B.E.W. and National Electrical Contractors Association, where he served as vice president, president and governor of NECA for the state of Iowa. He and Ruth were members of Mayflower Congregational Church since 1942. He was an avid golfer, bowler and card player. He was a former member of the Sioux City Boat Club and Dakota Dunes Country Club.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ruth Hossack of Sioux City; three daughters, Julie DeGroot, Susan Sembach and her husband, Steven, and Barbara Hossack, all of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Dr. Amy DeGroot-Hammer and her husband, Steven, Katherine Byam and her husband, Kris, and Emily Sembach; and two great-grandchildren, Abigail and Carter Hammer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriner's Children Hospital Transportation Fund or to St. Luke's Digestive Disorder Department.
