14 May 2008Marvin E. Nelson, 93, of Sioux City passed away Friday, May 9, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Trimble United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Martha Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.
Marvin Edward Nelson was born Aug. 18, 1914, in Plainview, Neb., the son of Laurence and Carrie (Tourteclotte) Nelson.
On Dec. 31, 1937, he was united in marriage to Bernice Ruhd in Le Mars, Iowa. He worked in a shipyard in Oregon during the 1940s. The family returned to the Sioux City area in the late 1940s. He was employed with Rufus Holtzen Construction. He never really retired, but just started to slow down a bit after 1979.
He was a member of the Painters Union Local 214. He was a man who worked with his hands and during the years, he built two houses by himself. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed his time boating and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice; two sons, Pat Nelson of Sioux City and Garry Nelson and his significant other, Mary Scrivner of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Carol Ann and Fred Byers of Sloan, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Marge Fargo of Texas; two sisters-in-law, Norma J. Nelson of Sergeant Bluff and Ellen Story of Sioux City; 12 grandchildren, Pat Nelson Jr., Barb Pfaffle, Jody Semonell, Garry Nelson Jr., Amanda Nelson, Amelia Nelson, LeeAnn Resendiz, Jeff Reitan, Steve Reitan, Teresa Jans, Vicki Kron and Derek Byers; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gordon "Bud" Nelson; and a sister, Mert Riley.
