Bernice C. "Bunny" Gass, 58, of Sioux City died Friday, April 11, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff. Burial will be at a later date in California. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Bunny was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Oct. 10, 1949, the daughter of Roy and Mary (Auerbach) Hempel. The family moved to California and she graduated in 1967 from North Hollywood High School.

She married Dennis Gass on Feb. 16, 1969, after his return from the service in Vietnam. Dennis began a career in community recreation while she worked for an optometrist as an office assistant. They divorced in 1990. In 1994, she moved to Sioux City.

She was a super mom, coaching soccer teams and very much an active mother to her sons. She enjoyed traveling, writing, reading and when living in California, being on the beach. She made many friends while with us for such a short time and will be missed.

She is survived by her three sons, Adam and his girlfriend, Kammie of Eagle Rock, Calif., Zachary and his wife, Elise of Sioux City and Jared and his wife, Tuesday of Fort Campbell, Ky. (Jared is currently deployed to Iraq); four grandchildren, Kaleb, Mackenzie, Tyson and Katelyn; and a brother and his wife, Berle and Christy Hempel of Moorpark, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
