Gene Patrick Sandage, 77, of Sioux City died Saturday, April 12, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with Monsignor Roger Augustine officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Mr. Sandage was born Nov. 10, 1930, in Sioux City, the son of Benjamin and Ester (LeMoine) Sandage. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Trinity High School in 1948. He then attended Morningside College until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1950. While in the Navy, he was stationed in Alameda, Calif., where he played football and was awarded All Navy for football. Once discharged from the Navy, he went on to play football for the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and graduated with a teaching degree in 1958.

He married Janice Kay Harward on Oct. 20, 1962, in Denver, Colo. They made their home in Sioux City, where they raised their three children. When he returned to Sioux City, he was hired on at Wigman Company in 1958. He moved into a sales position and continued to work there until he was just not physically able to work anymore in January 2007, although his mind was still on the job.

When he was not working, he refereed high school football and had a passion for playing golf. He was president of the men's club at the Elk Point Golf Course for many years. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Tim and Robyn Sandage; a daughter, Tracey Navrude; a son, Tony Sandage and his girlfriend, Anne; and grandchildren, Charlie, Alex, Sarah and Rebecca Sandage, Riley and Katie Navrude and Elijah Sandage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Janice; and a brother, Jack.
