BRONSON, Iowa -- Mary Ellen Kratz, 80, of Clear Lake, Iowa, formerly of Bronson, died Friday, April 11, 2008, at Muse Norris Hospice Impatient Unit.

Upon her wishes, she was cremated. Memorial services will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Major Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory in Mason City, Iowa. Condolences may be sent online to wwwmajorericksonfuneralhome.com.

Mary Ellen Kratz was born May 20, 1927, in Anthon, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Ellen (Pierce) Worthan. She attended school in Bronson and graduated from Bronson High School in 1944. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City and earned her teaching certificate.

She was married to Marvin LeRoy Kratz on Sept. 22, 1946, in Bronson. To this union five children were born. The couple lived in Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota and Iowa, the family lived in Mason City, Iowa, from 1966 to 1968. When Marvin retired, they moved to Elbow Lake, Minn. She had lived in North Iowa for the last 13 years.

She enjoyed gardening, the outdoors and nature, was a great seamstress, was an avid bird watcher and was a wonderful cook. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she loved reading books to. She was a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society and the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Kristine and Don Miller of Rockford, Iowa, Marvin Lee and Kathy Kratz of Manly, Iowa, David and Kelly Kratz of Clear Lake, Iowa, Ray and Deb Kratz of Wilson, Mich., and Lynn and Teri Kratz of Redwood Falls, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Dean and Jeanette Worthan of Storm Lake, Iowa; and a sister and her husband, Margery and Howard Ahern of Puerto Rico.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin in 1989; an infant sister, Dorothy Jean Worthan; and a sister-in-law, Rafa Worthan.
