BOWLING ALLEY MANAGER DIES
‘Jack’ Montagne Had Won State Kegling TourneysJohn (“Jack”) Montagne, 54, 1418 W. Third street, manager of the War Eagle Bowling alleys and well known Sioux City bowler, died Wednesday in a hospital after a year’s illness.
Born in Jefferson, S.D., March 2, 1895, he came to Sioux City 33 years ago, and has lived here since. He was manager of the War Eagle alleys for 31 years before his illness.
Promoter of several bowling tournaments in the four-state area around Sioux City, Montagne’s bowling career was highlighted in 1941 when he won the all events crown at the state bowling meet. In 1938, he teamed with Paul Gustafson to win the state doubles crown, and in the same year gained recognition for rolling a 740 series.
He bowled three perfect games and was secretary of the Journal-Tribune publications’ annual tournament in 13 of the last 16 years.
He was a member of the Moose and Eagles lodges.
Survivors include a son, John William Montagne of Sioux City; a daughter, Mrs. Melvin Sogge of St. Paul, Minn.; three sisters, Mrs. Lawrence Limoges, Mrs. Robert Campbell and Mrs. Marie McNulty, all of Sioux City; a brother, Arthur, of Sacramento, Cal.; and four grandchildren.
The body was taken to the Rutledge funeral home.
