3 November 2008SIOUX CITY -- Helen Ann Cruz, 79, of Sioux City passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at her home after an eight-year illness with cancer.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery in South Sioux City. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, 9th and Jennings Streets.
Helen was born Aug. 28, 1929, in Hubbard, Neb., the daughter of Henry and Loretta (Riley) Johnson. She attended Heelan High School.
Helen married Joaquin Cruz on Aug. 30, 1998, in Sioux City after being together since 1979. In earlier years, Helen worked at the Holiday Inn; then she became a full-time homemaker.
She attended St. Boniface Church for many years. Helen enjoyed working with flowers, gardening, reading, cooking, her pet birds and spending time with family.
Survivors include her husband, Joaquin Cruz of Sioux City; three children, Lynn (Desiree) Johnson of Walthill, Neb., Steve (Betty) Moore of Kansas City, Mo., and Cheryl (Raymond) Torres of Knickerbocker, Texas; a sister, Charleen (Earl) Ashmore of Sioux City; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven stepsons, Joaquin Cruz Jr., Mario (Shannon) Cruz, Miguel (Tracy) Cruz, Juan (Brenda) Cruz, Gabriel Cruz, Reymundo (Isela) Cruz and Jerardo (Nichole) Cruz, all of Sioux City; 35 step-grandchildren; and 13 great-step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, James Moore; and a brother, Henry Johnson.
Pallbearers will be Joaquin Cruz Jr., Mario Cruz, Miguel Cruz, Juan Cruz, Gabriel Cruz and Reymundo Cruz.
