20 April 2008John P. "Jack" Lovaas, 80, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, April 11, 2008, at his home following a bout with pulmonary fibrosis.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Ft. Snelling Memorial Chapel in Minneapolis, Minn. Burial will be in Ft. Snelling Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapel in Columbia Heights, Minn.
He was in the fire service in Minneapolis for almost 30 years, retiring as a deputy chief. He then went to Sioux City as fire chief for more than eight years.
He was a member of Apache Wells Church, Sunland Village Sabre Club of Mesa, Arcana Masonic Lodge of Minneapolis, Scottish Rite, Abu Bekr Shrine and Morningside-Rose Croix Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Sioux City. He was an active member of the White Horse Mounted Patrol in Sioux City for eight years and a member of First Congregational Church in Sioux City.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Agnes; two daughters, Kathryn (Ralph) Jewell and Mary (Allen) Curtis; two grandsons, Michael and Kristopher Curtis; two brothers-in-law, Robert Grich and George (Lorraine) Scott; and nephews, Tom, John and Robert Scott.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Paul and Irene Lovaas; and a sister, Shirley Grich.
Memorials may be directed to the Hospital Transportation Fund of the Abu Bekr Shrine, 820 Nebraska St., Sioux City, IA 51101.
