SIOUX CITY -- Joyce M. Schiro, 77, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, in Sioux City surrounded by her family.

Joyce was born Aug. 14, 1931, in Oakland, Calif., and grew up in La Grande, Ore. She graduated from La Grande High School in 1949. She went on to earn a degree in chemistry from the University of Oregon.

She married Jack Goebel in 1952, in Wallowa, Ore. She taught school while he finished his education. Together, they raised three sons and resided most of their married life in Butte, Mont. Later in life, she returned to school, earning a law degree from the University of North Dakota. She returned to Oregon and practiced law in Eugene, Ore. for several years. Her final days were spent in Sioux City, making new friends and enjoyed her grandchildren.

She maintained a keen intellect and curiosity throughout her life. She was fascinated by the natural world around her as well as historical and current events. Her passions included amateur radio, where she carried the call sign K7RRS for more than 40 years. She also loved animals, especially dogs. Her dogs were among her best friends.

She is survived by her sons and their spouses, John and Ann Goebel of Sioux City, Mark and LuAnn Goebel of St. Cloud, Minn., and Franz Goebel and Ali Igmen of Los Angeles, Calif.; and her grandchildren, Katherine, Mary and Daniel Goebel of Sioux City.
