Harold W. Barnes, 83, of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness, surrounded by his family.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Community of Christ Church, 3232 Transit Ave., Sioux City, with Dale Smith officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the 185th Air National Guard. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service.

Harold was born Aug. 28, 1924, in Cleghorn, Iowa, the son of Milton and Celia (Stemper) Barnes. He married Faye E. Beauchene on Aug. 21, 1949, at her folks' farm near Jefferson, S.D. They spent 58 wonderful years together.

Harold served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, attended aircraft gunnery school and graduated from airplane and engine mechanic school. He was stationed at several air bases working on different aircraft.

After his discharge from the Army, Harold worked for Armour Meat Packing Co., but then went back to work for the federal government at the Sioux City air base. He transferred to the Grand Forks, N.D., air base from 1959 until 1963, at which time he worked as aircraft fuel and ground fuels supervisor. He transferred back to the Sioux City air base and was appointed base fuels management officer, a position he held until the base was deactivated. He was a member of the 185th Air National Guard. Harold retired from the federal government in 1982 and the Air National Guard in 1985.

Harold was an active member and deacon at Community of Christ Church and a member of American Legion Monahan Post 64. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and the time spent with his grandchildren.

Harold is survived by his wife, Faye; a daughter, Karen and her husband, Larry McCaslen and their children, Michelle and her husband, Scot Lilly, and Matthew McCaslen, all of Sioux City; two sons, Gerald Barnes and his wife, Carol and their son, Ryan of Sioux City, and Wayne Barnes and his wife, Christy of Sioux City, and their children, Angie and her husband, Jamie Meins of Homer, Neb., Cory Barnes and his wife, Melonie of Sioux City, and Brandi Barnes of Sioux City; five great-grandchildren; three great-stepgrandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Mae Graves; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
