Lloyd O. Haefs, 87, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, May 22, 2008, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Lloyd was born Feb. 17, 1921, to Walter and Gladys (Larsen) Haefs in Sioux City. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1939. He then attended one year at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

He married Winnelle Henell at Whiting, Iowa. Lloyd enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Corps on March 26, 1942, in Des Moines. He served in the European Theater and was shot down over Greece. He was awarded the Air Medal with 7 OLC (posthumously) until it was discovered that he was actually a P.O.W. He was also awarded a Purple Heart, EAME Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Lloyd was honorably discharged on May 3, 1946, in San Antonio, Texas.

Upon his return to Sioux City, he began working at Iowa Public Service, where he was a gas serviceman until his retirement after 35 years of service.

He was a member of the American Legion. Lloyd enjoyed fishing and hunting and watching baseball on TV. He also played baseball for the Sioux City Cowboys, a feeder team for the St. Louis Cardinals, which had drafted him. He also enjoyed bowling on the I.P.S. bowling league and loved to read and tell stories.

Survivors include his wife, Winnelle Haefs of Sioux City; six children, Doug Haefs and wife, Robin, Cliff Haefs and wife, Jill, Cathy Harsma and husband, Mike, Steve Haefs, Phil Haefs and wife, Bonnie, and Connie Haefs; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Bonnie McEveny and Eileen Haefs.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Dave.

Arrangements are pending with Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
