WASHTA, Iowa -- Marvin H. Volkert, 81, of Washta died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002 at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing, Iowa, with the Rev. Joelle Colville-Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Cushing Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Barker Funeral Home in Correctionville, Iowa.

Marvin was born April 2, 1921 in rural Washta, the son of John and Anna (Brune) Volkert. He attended the Douglas Center School and graduated from Washta High School. Marvin was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing, where he remained a lifetime member. He served in many leadership capacities at St. John's.

He married Alice Utesch on March 21, 1943 in Cushing. They farmed in the Washta area until his retirement. Marvin was involved in the sales of farm chemicals, seeds and short line equipment. He served on the Ida County Soil Conservation Board, Co-op Board, Cattlemen's Association Board and was a Douglas Doers 4-H club leader.

Marvin enjoyed dancing, traveling, gardening, Senior Citizen activities and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Alice; four sons and their wives, David and Melvina of Correctionville, Bruce and Jana of Washta, Joel and Jamy of Pierson, Iowa, and Gary and LuAnn of Denison, Iowa; a daughter, Diane and her husband, Harold Droegmiller, of Holstein, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Lynn William, in infancy.
