HOLSTEIN, Iowa -- William J.E. "Bill" Meyer, 66, of Holstein died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital, following a short but courageous battle with mesothelioma lung cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Iowa, with the Rev. Richard Salcido officiating. Burial will be in Ida Grove Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Dessel-Schmidt Post 225. Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. today at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove. Online condolences may be directed to www.christensenhuffman.com.

Born Nov. 7, 1941, in Holstein, Iowa, William Julieun Edward Meyer was the son of Edward W. and Irene Miriam (Sacquety) Meyer. He was a lifelong resident of the Holstein area, graduating from Holstein Community Schools in 1960. Bill joined the U.S. Navy following high school, serving aboard the guided missile cruiser U.S.S. Canberra until his honorable discharge in May of 1966. Bill made three western Pacific tours to Vietnam, one Mediterranean tour and was involved in the Cuban missile crisis in October of 1962. After the Navy, Bill returned to Holstein and worked driving truck and farming in Ida County until his death.

On May 27, 1974, Bill married Beverly (Knudsen) German at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, Iowa. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Dessel-Schmidt Post 225 of the American Legion and the Ida County Democrats, where he held several offices over the years.

Left to mourn his passing and cherish his memories are his wife, Beverly; a son and his wife, Tom and Kristi German of Holstein; three grandchildren, Morgan, Daniel and Grace German; two sisters, Hollis (Reuben) Gawara of Santee, Calif., and Janiver (Gary) Anthony of Omaha, Neb.; a niece, Miriam Gawara and a nephew, James Gawara of Santee; aunts, Alvina Christiansen of Holstein, Annetta Bumann of Storm Lake, Iowa, Alene Johnson of Texas, Ellen Meyer of Rockford, Iowa, and Mary Meyer of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; several cousins and other extended family members as well as many friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Valerie Meyer; and his parents-in-law, Hans and Marlon Knudsen.
