Sioux City Journal
8 December 2005

Kenneth V. Baldwin, 74, of Creighton, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, in Center, Neb.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Creighton, with the Rev. Norman Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Brockhaus Funeral Home in Creighton.

Kenneth Victor Baldwin, the son of Austin and Jessie (LeBranch) Baldwin, was born Nov. 7, 1931, in Plainview, Neb. He attended Creighton High School, Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., and the University of South Dakota at Vermillion.

He married Lois June Knuth on June 8, 1957, at Zion Lutheran Church in Plainview, Neb. He fathered four children, Michael Edward, Susan Alain, Jeanette and Douglas Allen.

He taught at high schools in Albion and Hartington, Neb. He was an instructor in Springfield, S.D.. and a professor of biology for 25 years at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City. He ranched near Center, Neb., and adjusted crop insurance in the High Plains for Columbia and Dawson Insurance Companies.

He was an avid naturalist, a thoughtful member of Zion Lutheran Church, a Veteran of Foreign Wars, a member of the Niobrara Rough Riders, the Western Swingers and a boyish visitor of the Senior Citizen and Anniversary Club of Creighton. He was active in the Audubon Society and Sierra Club, participating in the Missouri River studies, in restoring the prairie near Sioux City and in shooting regional wildflower photography. He enjoyed fishing, canoeing and river boat rafting.

He died Dec. 5 at his ranch near Center, Neb. Although he didn't die in the saddle, he died in the place he loved, on the wheels, in the snow, near the Bazile Creek where redtail hawks nest and frolic. Having a passionate interest in geology most of his life, he probably won't mind spending a few years in the earth near us and he will live on in all of hearts.

His survivors include his wife, Lois of Creighton; a son and his wife, Michael and Lenore Baldwin of Brownsville, Texas; a daughter and her husband, Susan and Robert Funck of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Jeanette and Josip Novakovich of Warriors Mark, Pa.; a son, Douglas Baldwin of Omaha; five grandchildren; and his brothers, Arthur Baldwin of Pearland, Texas, Russell Baldwin of Creighton and Roland Baldwin of Lakewood, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Jessie Baldwin; and a brother, Allen Baldwin.
