Veda Eileen Arnold, 85, of Sioux City died Thursday, March 24, 2005 at Morningside Nursing and Rehab.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Marty Young officiating. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery at Holly Springs, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Veda was born August 29, 1919, on a farm near Moville, Iowa, the only daughter of Donald and Myrtie (Sickels) Weaver. Her parents divorced in 1931. Her mother, Myrtie, then married Paul Feddersen. She attended school at Moville and graduated from Moville Public High School in 1937, the largest class up until that year. She continued her education at Western Union College in LeMars, Iowa and received her elementary teaching certificate in 1939. She taught third and fourth graders in Climbing Hill, Iowa and one year at Correctionville, Iowa.

She married Chester (Chet) Arnold of Holly Springs on June 1, 1944, in Moville. In 1945, they moved to Sioux City and purchased their home at 2910 Stone Park Blvd. After moving to Sioux City, Veda taught at Grant School. She always wanted two little girls of her own. Finally, in 1951, her dream came true—Myrta Ruth was born and along came baby No. 2, sally Ann, in August 1952.

Veda resumed teaching when her girls were in school. She taught kindergarten for several years at Hawthorne Elementary School. She loved teaching and loved her students.

In 1989, Veda and Chet entered Countryside Retirement Home. Chet died February 19, 1991. Veda moved to Morningside Nursing and Rehab in late 2002. The family of Veda and Chet want to thank all of the staff at both care facilities for the great care they both received.

Veda was a member of First Christian Church in Sioux City. She will be remembered for her fantastic homemade angel food cakes, her lovely letter-writing and yearly Christmas letters sent to 200 friends and family.

Survivors include two daughters, Myrta Ruth Hansen and her husband Lee, of Lincoln, Nebraska and Sally Ann Harkins of Sioux City; a granddaughter, Deana (Bill) Smyth of Omaha, Nebraska, two grandsons, Daniel Hansen of Lincoln and John (Casie Pruss) Hansen of Lincoln; four step-grandchildren, Cindy Patterson of Springfield, Missouri, Debbie (Roger Sr.) Parmeter of Kirbyville, Missouri, Robin (Scott) Simmons of Kennesaw, Georgia and Dana (Shawn) Rogers of Mount Vernon, Missouri; five great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother and step-father, Myrtie and Paul Fedderson; her father and step-mother, Donald and Mary Weaver, and a son-in-law, Bob Harkins.

Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church Youth Fund.
