SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Dorothy "Daisy" (Harshfield) Frishman, 89, of Ankeny, Iowa, formerly of South Sioux City, went home to the Lord Saturday, April 2, 2005, at a Des Moines hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Whitfield United Methodist Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Michelle Williamson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Dorothy was born Aug. 19, 1915, in Anthon, Iowa, to Walter S. and Mabel J. (Malcom) Harshfield. The family later moved to Lawton, Iowa, where she graduated from high school in 1931. She went on to nurses training at St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Sioux City, becoming a registered nurse. Her nickname of "Daisy" came from a play she was in during her nurses training.

She began her career as a surgical nurse, going on to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. She worked in evacuation field hospitals in Africa and France. When the war ended, she returned to Sioux City, working first at St. Joseph's Hospital, then for Dr. Ronald F. Martin until his death in 1962. She went on to supervise the Obstetrics Department and later the Outpatient/Emergency Room Department at St. Luke's Medical Center, retiring in 1981.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, daughter and friend who was loved and will be missed by many. Even in retirement, she spent her time caring for others. She was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, cooking, golf and spending time with her family.

She served in women's ministry groups at both Whitfield United Methodist Church in Sioux City and First United Methodist Church in Ankeny, having been a member of both churches.

She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Andrea and Russell Rose of Ankeny; six granddaughters and their husbands, Robin and Kevin Riggins of Urbandale, Iowa, Rebecca and Dr. Gregory Clark of Worthington, Minn., Kristin and Kevin Melcher of Ankeny, Sarah and Mark Ferree of Des Moines, Natalie and Jeff Mitchell of DePere, Wis., and Erica and Tim Arganbright of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 10 great-grandchildren, Melissa Clark, Jeremy Clark, Zachary Clark, Timothy Clark, Katelyn Melcher, Kyle Melcher, Dakota Mills-Ferree, Creighton Ferree, Carson Ferree and Aubry Mitchell; a sister, Virginia Mauer of Denver, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and six brothers, Keith, Stuart, Wayne, Dale, Stanley and Lynn Harshfield.

Memorials may be made to Whitfield United Methodist Church of Sioux City or First United Methodist Church of Ankeny.
