Benjamin Polaykoff, 76, of Sioux City died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Private family graveside services were held at Independent Farane Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Polaykoff was born Sept. 19, 1928, in Sioux City, the son of Max and Macha (Silver) Polaykoff. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Sioux City schools. He toured one summer while in high school with the Sully Mason Band. Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army then returned to Sioux City. He attended Morningside College.

He married Etta Lee Ginsburg on Feb. 6, 1949, in Sioux City. In 1948, he and his brother, Abe, joined their mother in the family business, Polaykoff Food Market. Ben and Abe were partners in the food market for 43 years, retiring in 1991.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Congregation Beth Shalom. He had played percussion for the last 11 years with the Siouxland All America Concert Band, for which he was very proud to be a member. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Etta of Sioux City; three daughters, Marci Beman and her special friend, Chip Beronius of St. Cloud, Minn., Cindy Dishlip and her special friend, Larry Larson of Beaverton, Ore., and Barb and her husband, Kent McCuddin of Sioux City; a brother, Abe Polaykoff of Sioux City; a sister, Sara Herzoff of Sioux City; and six grandchildren, Meagan Beman, Dr. Mandi Furlow, Amy Dishlip, Jason Dishlip, Allison McCuddin and Britni McCuddin.

He was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Aaron Steven McCuddin.

His favorite quote was "Life is just a bowl of cherries."
