Werner Paul "Vener" Hoffman, 99, of Sioux City died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Marvin Mueller officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Mr. Hoffman was born Dec. 17, 1905, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Louie and Christiana (Herbst) Hoffman. He grew up in the Le Mars area. He volunteered and served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart medal.

He married Frances Tieck on May 19, 1942, in Sioux City. Following the war, he farmed and then did construction work for W.A. Klinger. He later began working for Sioux Bee Honey and worked there for many years. Mrs. Hoffman died June 20, 1993, in Sioux City.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Tyrian Masonic Lodge 508 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite Bodies, Sioux City Consistory, Abu Bekr Shrine, The Foot Patrol and High Twelve. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and was a beekeeper and did honey processing.

He was a kind and caring man who was involved with his family and in the community. He gave much of himself. He was a selfless man who gave freely of his love, time and energy. Though small of stature, he was bigger than life itself. He saw the good in everyone, always speaking well of the people in his life.

As a brother, brother-in-law, uncle, father figure and friend to countless people, he went by many names including, Mr. Hoffman, Werner and Uncle Vener.

Although he never had any children of his own, Uncle Vener was a father figure to generations of nieces and nephews -- never missing an important event in any of their lives. Our uncle had an easy laugh and an inviting smile that twinkled in his eyes. Even though he reached the age of 99, he never lost interest in life. To his last days, he loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and Saturday nights with Lawrence Welk.

Survivors include two brothers and their wives, Theodore M. and Marjorie (Anderson) Hoffman of Le Mars, Iowa, and Louis and Cleo Hoffman of Jeffers, Minn.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Dorothy and Bill Dodge of Sioux City; a brother-in-law and his wife, Robert and Betty Tieck of Gainsville, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Elmer; and a sister, Gertrude Donlin.

He will be missed. Our lives are forever enriched because of his love.
