Harlan H. Montgomery, 92, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Third Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Kathy Wicks officiating. Burial will be in Floyd Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel (formerly Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel).

Harlan H. Montgomery was born Dec. 14, 1912, in Sioux City, the son of Frank M. and Nellie D. (Woolworth) Montgomery. He attended Sioux City public schools, graduating from Central High School and Morningside College. He completed the Associated General Contractors of America School for association managers and the National Association of Home Builders School for executive officers, both in Washington, D.C.

He married Bernice L. Jacobsen on June 10, 1939, in Sioux City. Mrs. Montgomery died Nov. 25, 1990. Harlan was employed for 13 years by the Sioux City Gas and Electric Co. (now MidAmerican Energy), part-time while attending college and full-time after graduating. He became the executive officer of the Sioux City Construction League, the Master Builders Association of Sioux City and the Home Builders Association of Siouxland on June 1, 1947. He founded the Home Builders' annual Home Show. He helped establish the Sioux City Adequate Wiring Bureau and served as its manager until it was terminated after successfully achieving its purpose. He retired July 15, 1978, following 31 years of service to the building industry.

Harlan served three terms on the City of Sioux City Redevelopment Committee and as chairman of that Committee's Codes and Ordinances subcommittee and the Rehabilitation subcommittee. He served two terms on the National Association of Home Builders Economic Council. He was active for many years in the United Way fund campaigns, heading the construction industry section and received several honors for exceeding goals established for the industry.

He was a 50-year life member of Tyrian Lodge 508 AF & AM, the Sioux City Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Iowa, the Columbian Comandery 18KT and the Abu Bekr Shrine. He was a member of the National Association of Home Builders Executive Council, the International Builders Exchange Executives, the Sioux City Engineers Club, the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce, serving on its Streets and Highway Committee, the Third Presbyterian Church, serving on its Board of Trustees, the National Rifle Association, the Siouxland Senior Center and the American Association of Retired People. Harlan was awarded an honorary life membership in the International Builders Exchange Executives, the Sioux City Construction League and the Home Builders Association of Siouxland.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara B. Montgomery and Linda L. Haley; two grandsons, Michael M. Haley and William R. Haley, all of Sioux City; a sister, E. Evelyn Sowell of Des Moines; and a special friend, Marcella Mustapha of Sioux City.

In addition to his wife, Bernice, he was preceded in death by two brothers, DeWayne D. Montgomery and Harvey Montgomery; and a sister, Dorothy B. Carr.

Memorials may be directed to Third Presbyterian Church or the Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund.
