Sheryll M. Potts, 71, of Burbank, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at her residence surrounded by her family following a brief illness.

Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Revs. Dan Davis and Dale Pedersen and Deacon Dennis Davis officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m.

Sheryll M. Kelley was born Nov. 7, 1933, in Sioux City, the daughter of Lionel C. and Ursula D. (Murphy) Kelley. She attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Heelan High School.

She married Kenneth L. Potts on Sept. 5, 1953, in Sioux City.

Sheryll was hired by the Woodbury County Jail in 1980. She was one of the first two ladies to be hired as correction officers. She worked at the old jail until September 1987, at which time she was part of the transition team that moved inmates to the new jail. She held the rank of corporal for several years. She retired in 1995, as the first correction officer to retire from the Woodbury County Jail.

After retiring, she was a volunteer with the Sioux City Police Department from 1995 to 1997. Her hobbies included cross-stitch, needlepoint, all crafts, card playing and dominoes. She was an avid sports fan.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth; a son, Kevin Potts and Jackie Grace of South Sioux City and children Shane and Jennie Potts and Pat and Sara Grace; two daughters, Michele (Dale) Pedersen of St. Louis, Mo., and children Michela, Tanisha and Joshua Pedersen, and Lori (Duane) Tranmer of Olympia, Wash., and children Travis and Troy Potts, Damon Wiffen, Ricci Tranmer and Toni Tranmer; a daughter-in-law, Lori Potts of Sioux City and children Andy, Kelsie and Cody Potts; three great-grandchildren, Axton Potts and Kale and Sage Tranmer; and a special niece, Sherry (Jeff) Kelley-Thomson and children Kelley Thomson-Pearson, Dylan Thomson and Mitzi McAndrews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Russell Potts; a daughter in infancy, Mary Catherine Potts; and a brother, Stan Kelley.

Casket bearers will be grandsons Travis Potts, Troy Potts, Andy Potts, Shane Potts, Joshua Pedersen, Damon Wiffen and Cody Potts.
