Donald Francis Joynt, 101, of Green Bay, Wis., formerly of Sioux City, beloved father, grandpa and great-grandpa, passed away Sunday, July 2, 2006, surrounded by family and friends.

Services were held Thursday, July 6, at St. Mary's of the Angels Church in Green Bay. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Madison, Wis.

Donald was born March 18, 1905, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, to David and Katherine (Brennan) Joynt. He became a well-known football star at St. Mary's High School in Emmetsburg. The "cowboy" continued his successful football career at Trinity College in Sioux City, and later at St. Francis College in Loretta, Pa. Donald returned to Sioux City after graduation and became a teacher and coach at Trinity College. His players described him as a wonderful model, who taught lessons about dedication, team loyalty, caring and the importance of leadership.

While at Trinity, Donald met and married Mary Christine Sudbeck of Crofton, Neb. They had five children, Patrick, Donna, Daniel, Mary and Thomas. All of their children eventually became involved in education, an accomplishment he always took great pride in. After resigning from his teaching and coaching duties in the 1940s, Donald took a job with Ray-O-Vac in Sioux City and was later transferred to Madison, Wis. After retiring from Ray-O-Vac, he served as a physical education teacher in Madison until 1979. Donald spent the rest of his life in Green Bay. He loved traveling to visit his children and their families all around the world.

No matter where he was, Donald believed in becoming actively involved in the community and church. He volunteered countless hours at schools, churches and community organizations. He also loved to reminisce and tell stories and jokes to all he met. Through it all, Donald's family and faith remained his true focus.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Breitbach, age 99; his children, Patrick (Unni) Joynt, Donna (William) Vachon, Daniel (Gael Lord) Joynt, Mary (Maurice) Conway and Thomas (Kathleen) Joynt; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; two nephews, Duane and Harold Sudbeck, both of Sioux City; and his many friends, students and athletes of Trinity High School.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary; and his brothers, Joseph and Rev. Robert Joynt.
