Rex Eugene Carnes, 75, of Sioux City died Friday, July 7, 2006, at his residence, following lengthy illnesses.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Craig Bock officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Rex was born March 18, 1931, in Onawa, Iowa, the son of Edward and Jane (Rhode) Carnes. He was raised in the Onawa area and attended country schools in the Pisgah, Iowa, area. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict between 1951 and 1953.

On June 30, 1956, Rex married Joyce Marie Clark at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Together they raised their five children here in Sioux City. Two weeks ago, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Rex was employed by Wilson Trailer as a welder for more than 24 years.

He attended St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Rex will always be remembered as a wonderful father, who deeply loved his family and grandchildren. He will also be remembered as a hard worker and man who loved to tell tall tales.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Tim and Rachel Carnes of Sacramento, Calif. and Ron and Sheila Carnes of Papillion, Neb.; three daughters, Jenny Murray of Sioux City, Teresa and her husband, Bruce Salsness of Sioux City and Elaine Carnes of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Lyle and his wife, Shirley Carnes of Sioux City and Howard Carnes of Ames, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Roy Carnes and Eddie Carnes.
