Eleanor L. Petersen, 85, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, at her residence following a brief illness.

Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul Spaulding officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Eleanor was born April 24, 1920, in the family farm east of Hinton, Iowa, the daughter of Martin and Laura (Zweifel) Riediger. She moved with her family to Sioux City as a young child and graduated from Central High School in 1937. She worked at Albertson and Company until her marriage.

She married Jorgen C. Petersen on June 13, 1943, at First Lutheran Church in Sioux City. She later worked for John Harvey Commission Co. in the stockyards, retiring in 1981.

She was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church, where she was formerly an organist, treasurer of Word Alone, Rachel Circle and the call committee. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, the Stockettes, Scandinavian Society and Women's Chorus Club. She was a member of the St. Luke's Auxiliary, where she was involved with their Santa House and Life Line phone installation. She also was involved with the White Horse Mounted Patrol. She had a love of music, quilting, sewing and traveling. She cherished the time spent with family during celebration and at gatherings.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Jorgen; a son, Richard Petersen of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter and her husband, Nancy and Bill Gutschow of South Sioux City; a granddaughter, Sally Gutschow attending the University of Nebraska-Omaha; two brothers and their wives, Warren and LaVerne Riediger of Sioux City and Ronald and Sharon Riediger of Merrill, Iowa; a sister, Lois O'Dea of Sahuarita, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother-in-law, Bill O'Dea.

Pallbearers will be Chuck Storm, Jack Mook, Robert Petersen, Craig Riediger, David Riediger and Gary Carlton.
