Edina, Minn., formerly Sioux City

Nancy Ann Heidman, 76, of Edina, Minn., formerly Sioux City, a style maven and a longtime entrepreneur in the Edina retail hub, passed away on Oct. 17, 2018.

Nancy was a very private woman. If you wanted to know her cause of death, she would have told you that it was none of your business. If you ask her kids, they would tell you she had a chronic lung condition that eventually caught up with her. She put up a good battle, one she would not have wanted to lose.

She was born to Stanley and Rachel Kulpa on Nov. 19, 1941, in Hartford, Conn. As a young woman, she resided in Bloomfield, Conn., where she attended school. She graduated from Bloomfield High School and went on to attend the University of Connecticut, where she earned a degree in nursing.

After college, she went to serve in the United States Navy Nurse Corps, stationed in San Diego, Calif. There she met her future husband, Marvin Heidman, who was also serving in the Navy. The two were married on Oct. 17, 1964, in West Hartford, Conn. They were married for 20 years until they parted ways in 1984. They raised three children together, living in Sioux City. During her Iowa years, Nancy was involved in various volunteer organizations and enjoyed running, cooking, entertaining and was a seamstress extraordinaire. She was also able to put her nursing skills to work a second time as a volunteer at the Sioux City Planned Parenthood Clinic, work that was important and satisfying to her. Perhaps the best thing that came from those years was the core group of friends she made, amazing women who would stay close and stay friends up to this day.

In 1985, Nancy relocated from Sioux City to Minneapolis. There she had a new beginning and a second life as a style influencer and retail store owner in the Edina area. She built and ran her business, n’etc, for almost 30 years and, through her unique eye for fashion and what to wear, brought a different kind of shopping experience to her customers. Her store gained a reputation and became a destination "go-to" mostly because of Nancy’s natural ability to dress women well. There, too, she made a core group of friends, amazing women who would stay close and stay friends up to this day.

She is survived by her children, Denise Heidman Sheridan (Tim) of Colorado Springs, Colo. Melissa Heidman (Craig Pinkner) of Boulder, Colo., and Christopher Heidman of Minneapolis, Minn.; her grandchildren, Sam Sheridan of Denver, Colo., Rachel Sheridan of Colorado Springs, Ella Heidman Pinkner of Boulder, and Finn Heidman Pinkner of Boulder; her brother, Stanley Kulpa (Marilyn) of Bloomfield, Conn.; and by her niece, Kara Kulpa of Bloomfield, Conn.

Throughout her life, several things were constant, Nancy was an avid reader. She enjoyed time spent with her kids and grandkids. She always had a secret chocolate stash in the house and a crime drama playing on the TV. She loved her garden, anything made with rhubarb, shoes, traveling by the subway system in NYC, disco music, a good hamburger and just about every dog she ever met (but mostly her own). Patience was not her virtue and neither was understanding, especially for those who made bad fashion decisions. Nancy had more style in her little finger than most have in their whole beings. Her presence and her incredible eye for style will be greatly missed by many, most of all by her family.

If you could ask Nancy, she would say this is too much information and she would not want to have to repeat herself. If you ask her kids, they would tell you this is a fitting last tribute to one heck of a beautiful, unique and complicated woman. Nancy specifically said no funeral and in remembrance, you can donate in her name to the Animal Humane Society or to Planned Parenthood.
