Nancy Goodnow Woods, 81, of Mesa, formerly Sioux City, passed away Jan. 22, 2018.

A celebration of Nancy's life was held at Mariposa Gardens in Mesa. Go to dignitymemorial.com.

On Jan. 10, 1937, a girl who would be named Nancy was born to Irene and Harry Goodnow, who lived in Morningside on So. Cedar Street. Across the street was Whittier Elementary which Nancy attended until East Junior High School and finally East High where she played a trumpet in the marching band and was a Rainbow Girl.

Following high school, she began work at Northwestern Bell as an operator and then in their public office. After a courtship that started in junior high, Nancy married her school sweetheart, Dave Woods, at First Presbyterian Church in the spring of 1957. Upon graduating from Morningside College, Dave took a job in Minneapolis and Nancy transferred with the phone company where she was frequently recognized for outstanding work. This became the starting point of an odyssey that would take them to live in eight different cities over nearly 61 years of marriage while enriching their lives with three sons.

Nance, as Dave called her, became a full-time mom and homemaker. She loved animals and while living in Mesa, she became a volunteer docent at the Phoenix Zoo exhibiting various animals to school children. There would be more moves but in 1996, she and Dave returned to live in Mesa and this year, 12 days after her 81st birthday, she ascended to Heaven.

Nancy had the most beautiful, natural smile that revealed her gentle, agreeable nature. Her family loved her dearly and admired her for her strength and great courage.

She is survived by her husband, Dave; sons, Brad (Gina), Bob and John (Dina); five granddaughters; her brother-in-law, Jim Woods; and her sister-in-law, Charlene Goodnow.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and younger brother, Jim.

Donations in her name may be made to the American Kidney Fund.
