Alfred Edwin Swanson, 88, of Sioux City, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2018, in Las Vegas, Nev. after a short illness.

A celebration of his life will be 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Whispering Creek Golf Club, 6500 Whispering Creek Dr, in Sioux City. Friends and relatives are encouraged to attend to honor Ed's life.

Alfred "Ed", the son of Conrad Leonard Swanson and Edna K. Swanson, was born on Jan. 17, 1930 in Chicago, Ill. He graduated from Leeds High School in 1947, where he played football, basketball and ran track. He was class president and held the lead in the school play. Ed attended Gustava Adolphus College in St Peter, Minn., and served one year in the U.S. Navy.

While working at Armour Co in Sioux City, he met his wife, Maryjane (Burns) Swanson. (Deceased 2011). Ed worked for Iowa Public Service for 42 years in substation department. He retired in 1995.

Ed had many hobbies and interests. He owned a number of boats as well as airplanes during his lifetime. He flew a Comanche, Cessna 140 and ultralights out of Martin Field. He was a talented artist, painting oils, murals, and community street signs. He also created personalized lazy susans and stained glass.

He will always be remembered for his unconditional love and selfless commitment to family.

Ed is survived by four children, Tim (Cheryl) Swanson of Lexington, S.C., Teri (Brian) Janus of Arlington Heights, Ill., Tom (Jill) Swanson of Mapleton, Iowa, and Ted Swanson of Las Vegas. Ed had eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his sister, Marilyn Davis of Pittsburg, Kan
